History of Autopsy
○ More than 1800 years ago, GALEN dlid for first time dissection on animals and primates.

(King of Sicily and Holy Roman Emperor decree in 1231 "that no one surgeon be admitted to practice unless he be learned in the anatomy of human body")
History of Autopsy in India
○ Dr. Edward Bulkely performed, first documented medico- legal au topsy 1693 in Chennai.
○ Dr.Edward Bulkely first corner appointed by British
○ In 1882 first pathological autopsy was conducted at Grant medical college, Mumbai.

OBJECTIVES OF PATHOLOGICAL AUTOPSY
○ Objectives:
1. To confirm or establish the clinical diagnosis
2, To evaluate the effects of treatment given during life.
3, To determine the cause of ceath.

PSYCHOLOGIGAL AUTOPSY
○ It is a method for collection of informalion on alleged cases of suicide lo know about the mental status of deceased al the time of death.

OBJECTIVES OF MEDICOLEGAL AUTOPSY
Objectives:
1. To establish identity of deceased...very Important.
~Government give compensation, mass incident.
2. To determine time since death.
3. To establish cause of death
4. To establish manner of death
~ Road accident, homicide, suicide...etc
5. To establish and rule out foul play.
6. To identify weapon, person or poison responsible for death.
7. To collect the evidence
8.In case of new born infant to determineissue of live or still birth and viability.
9.In the cases of skeletal remains, to determine the source whether human or animal, the
probable cause of death & time elapsed since death.
Difference blw medicolegal and Pathological Autopsy.
1. Purpose- find out cause & manner of death
2. conducted by RMP ....... Pathologist
3. consent of relatives... Not required. required.
4. Ordered by IO. Not ordered by anyone
5. Report given to IO. None
6. Viscera. If analysis is reqd, sent to FSL/CFSL. if read, done within hospital.
7. Body handedver to 10...... relatives.
8.Give vidence in court read... not
9. Time for autopsy... day light ... anytime
10. Partial autospy. Not...can
11. Ancillary... done sorely... done routinely.
Types of Medicolegal autopsy
NON...
Normal
Obscure- No clear- cut findings as to give a definite cause of death.
Negative- gross, histology and toxicological findings do not provide explanation for the cause of death.
Rules of Medicolegal Autopsy
Authorized centers unless putrefaction/ DM (L&0)
By RMP of Govt Hosp/ Put Hosp approved by Govt
Body should be labeled as soon as it arrives for Pm.
Request / order from appropriate legal authority.
Relevant documents.
No unauthorized person allowed even police official
Identification of the body prior to autopsy.
should be performed w/o delay.
All details should be noted down
All +ve/ -ve findings recorded
Preserve specimen samples-chain of custody
